Congresswoman Matsui Statement on President Trump’s 2018 Proposed Budget
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2018:
“This proposal reflects the President’s misguided values. Making massive cuts on the backs of hardworking families will only damage our country’s economic competitiveness. As Congress deliberates on this proposal from the President, I urge my colleagues to join me in fighting for a budget that makes real investments in our nation’s future.
“This proposed budget is short on details and does not advance vital infrastructure projects that spur growth, resiliency, and job creation. Slashing funding for the Army Corps of Engineers’ civil works projects and cutting transit projects like the Capital Investment Grant Program would harm efforts to keep our communities running safely and efficiently.
“The Administration’s intention to cut billions from the National Institutes of Health would halt medical research that is saving lives and giving families hope.
“The President has made clear through this proposal that he will continue down a destructive path of damaging our environment and public health. Because of the EPA, we have cleaner air, cleaner water, and are reversing the damaging effects of climate change.
“This budget cuts the safety net out from under our most vulnerable. Gutting funding for public education and community development by zeroing out support for things like HUD’s Community Development Block Grant program and Choice Neighborhoods program hurts families trying to get ahead.
“The President has targeted some of our nation’s most important cultural institutions in this budget, from the National Endowment for the Arts, to the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, to AmeriCorps. These investments are a part of the fabric of our national identity, and they must be treasured.
“I will continue to advocate for a budget that is focused on investments that spur innovation and create opportunities for the jobs of today and tomorrow.”
