Rep. Doris Matsui Encourages Sacramento Teens to Apply for World Youth Summit
National Awardees to Visit Washington, D.C.

Today, Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-05) encouraged Sacramento-area teens to apply to the “Teening Up for a Greener World Youth Summit” program.  Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association, participants will spend three days in the nation's capital where they will meet lawmakers and learn about public transportation.

The summit will be held June 22-25, 2008 in Washington DC and the application submission deadline is April 25, 2008.  The summit will focus on the environmental benefits of public transportation, as well as on how communities prosper with increased public transit services. The all-expense-paid Summit will give participants the opportunity to spend three days in the nation's capital, meeting with lawmakers and leaders and learning first-hand the ways public transportation can shape the future.

Two Sacramento area students selected to go to the Youth Summit will then be invited to participate in a two-month-long paid internship at the Siemens Mobility light rail manufacturing facility and U.S. headquarters.

“As a member of Congress who sits on the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, it is my job to work to implement the laws, programs, and policies that are consistent with the challenges facing the United States.  With the threat of climate change confounded with America's growing population, the United States Congress needs to think critically about policies that will leave our children and grandchildren with a cleaner and more sustainable planet.

“As traffic congestion worsens and commutes from suburban communities to urban employment centers grow longer, land use and transportation decisions are increasingly important.  These are challenges that our future generations must consider. That is why I am encouraging high school sophomores and juniors to apply to participate in the ‘Teening Up for a Greener World Youth Summit.'

“This valuable youth summit is an important step in educating our next generation about the need for sustainable, clean energy and alternative transportation methods.  It is a great opportunity for the youth of Sacramento to show other teens from around the country that we are committed to lessening our impact on the environment, and have the initiative to lead the way,” said Rep. Matsui.

Applications are due by April 25th, and are available online at www.apta.com/youthsummit.
