Rep. Doris Matsui Encourages Sacramentan Teens to Enter the 2008 Congressional Art Competition
Today, Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-05) called on Sacramento high school students to submit their entries for the 2008 Congressional Art Competition. The winning artist’s submission will be on display in the United States Capitol for the entire year.“This is a wonderful opportunity for Sacramento students to show the rest of the nation how talented, innovative and creative they are. Every time I walk through the Capitol, it fills me with pride to see the artwork of a Sacramento student hanging on the wall. It reminds me what a wonderful place Sacramento is, and makes me nostalgic for home,” said Rep. Matsui.The competition is open to high school students from California’s Fifth Congressional district. All artwork must be submitted to Congresswoman Matsui’s office at the Robert T. Matsui Courthouse by May 9, 2008. The office is located at 501 I St., Suite 12-600 in Sacramento. All entries will be showcased in a local art show in late May, at which prizes for first, second and third places will be announced.The first place winner will be invited to attend a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Washington, D.C., with other winners across the nation. The ceremony will take place on June 25, 2008. Flight and hotel arrangements will be provided to the winner by sponsors.This year marks the 26th anniversary of the Congressional Art Competition. First launched in 1982, thousands of contests have been held around the country. Throughout the history of the competition, more than 650,000 high school students have been involved in the program.
