Comprehensive Appropriations Bill Passes U.S. House of Representatives
Rep. Doris Matsui Secures Funding for Sacramento Attendance Centers

Last night, Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-05) joined an overwhelming majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in passing a comprehensive spending bill that will fund the federal government for Fiscal Year 2008.  Rep. Matsui worked throughout the year to secure funding for an additional Sacramento Police Department School Attendance Center.

"It is our duty to keep the kids of the Sacramento region on track to graduate high school and out of trouble. These funds will benefit the entire community, by helping school staff and social workers work with truants on an individual basis to get them back in school.  When federal funds can be used to secure our community’s future prosperity and safety, government is working to better the lives of the citizens of this country," said Rep. Matsui.

Rep. Matsui worked to bring $282,000 to the program, which will help to provide truancy prevention and intervention services to at-risk students.  School truancy is one of several patterns of behavior known to increase the likelihood of juvenile delinquency. A goal of the Attendance Center program is to ensure students complete their education and avoid delinquent behavior.

"Thanks to these funds, the attendance centers will be able to service our community better.  I congratulate the Sacramento Police Department on receiving this much-needed funding.  They are providing an invaluable program for the youth of the Sacramento region," said Rep. Matsui.
