Comprehensive Appropriations Bill Passes U.S. House of Representatives
Rep. Doris Matsui Secures Funding for Sacramento Priorities

Last night, Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-05) joined an overwhelming majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in passing a comprehensive spending bill that will fund the federal government for Fiscal Year 2008. Rep. Matsui worked throughout the year to secure funding for several top Sacramento initiatives.

"Bringing federal resources home to Sacramento is a top priority for me. When federal funds can be used to secure our community's future prosperity and safety, government is working to better the lives of the citizens of this country," said Rep. Matsui.

Rep. Matsui was successful in securing significant funding for flood protection in the Sacramento region. She ensured that $62.8 million will be designated to improve the levees on the Sacramento and American Rivers. Of that, The South Sacramento Streams will receive $10.3 million, the Sacramento Bank will receive $21.5 million, and the American River Watershed will receive $31 million to make improvements.

The National Children's Study, which Rep. Matsui has worked tirelessly to maintain support for in Congress, will be fully-funded, receiving $110.9 million. The U.C. Davis Medical Center is a test site for the Study, which will track thousands of children from before birth to the age of 21. It is the largest longitudinal study of the environmental factors that affect children's health to ever be undertaken. Rep. Matsui launched a Congressional Working Group on Oct. 4, 2007, to keep her colleagues in Congress informed on the National Children's Study.

Rep. Matsui also worked to secure the following funds:

The Intermodal Rail Relocation Project will receive $392,000. These funds will be used in the track relocation project, which is a key component of the downtown railyard redevelopment project.

The Regional Transit (RT) South Sacramento Corridor Phase II Light Rail extension project will receive $4.41 million to extend Light Rail service to Consumnes River College. Currently, the Light Rail line terminates at Meadowview Road. This project will improve transit options and reduce congestion on Sacramento's roads by extending the South Line and adding four new light rail stations south of Meadowview Road.

The Sacramento Police Department School Attendance Center will receive $282,000 to fund counseling, mentoring, intervention, and prevention services to truant youth and their families in the City of Sacramento.

The Sacramento Food Bank will receive $343,000 for the construction of a new facility in North Sacramento.

The Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA) will receive approximately $95,000 to combat chronic homelessness in the Sacramento region. The funds will provide medical, mental health, substance abuse, and employment services for the homeless population in the Sacramento region.

The B.T. Collins High-Tech Training Center will receive $6.87 million to upgrade the existing training facility. These funds will allow for better training of army reservists in the communications, logistics and transportation disciplines.

The Senior Legal Hotline will receive $76,000 to increase services to non-English-speaking seniors. The Hotline I s a free legal advice service offered to area seniors.

The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department will receive $329,000 to replace the Computer Aid Dispatch (CAD) System. The new technology will help the department to communicate more effectively with other law enforcement agencies.

The U.C. Davis Medical Center will receive $569,867 to continue construction of a state-of-the-art medical education building and medical library.

The Downtown Combined Sewer Improvement Project will receive $492,200. It will be used to continue restoring and upgrading the sewer system in downtown Sacramento, limiting overflows during storm surges.
