Congresswoman Doris Matsui Calls On Her Colleagues to Override the President’s Newest Veto
Legislation Makes Crucial Investments in Domestic Priorities

November 15, 2007

Today, Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-05) released the following statement on the President’s veto of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill for Fiscal Year 2008 (H.R. 3043). The bill makes major investments in America’s top domestic priorities, and will fully-fund the National Children’s Study, funding that was secured due to the efforts of Rep. Matsui.

"The President continues to ignore the priorities of the American people, asking for more funding for his war in Iraq while turning his back on the citizens back home. He has denied ten million children health care, and now he is trying to stop us from investing in a healthier future for America.

"The Democratic Majority is committed to taking this country in a different direction, and we will not indulge the President’s political posturing. We are here to do the people’s business, and I urge my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to override the President’s misguided veto of this important and popular legislation.

"The National Children’s Study will be fully-funded through this bill, an undertaking that will have far-reaching benefits for the health of Americans now and for generations to come. It is a true investment in the future of our children, and has strong bipartisan support.

"Our predecessors had the wisdom to make investments to keep America safe and healthy. It is now incumbent upon this Congress to take similar action, and pave the way for a better, healthier America than the one we inherited. Today, I will proudly cast my vote to override the President’s veto of this appropriations bill."
