Congresswoman Matsui Speaks Announces Steps Taken To Secure Funding For Sacramento

Friday, July 13, 2007

On Wed., July 11, the 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill passed through Committee Markup. The bill strives to improve education, human services and healthcare options for Americans, and includes key provisions for Sacramento.

Under the version of the bill passed by the Appropriations Committee, the University of California Davis Medical Center (UCDMC) library will receive $420,000. With these funds, the library will be able to provide classroom equipment and instructional technology for both the medical library and education center.

In addition, the Senior Legal Hotline (SLH) is designated to receive $80,000. The money will allow the SLH to implement and evaluate a comprehensive, new system to dramatically increase its service to non-English speaking seniors.

“It is my duty to make sure that Congress invests in our nation’s future by funding programs that bolster the quality of education and healthcare. I am fully committed to investing in the strength of the Sacramento community,” said Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-5).

The bill invests resources into worker development, healthcare and educational opportunity. The bill increases the cap on Pell Grants from $390 to $4,700, allowing more students access to higher education. It increases funding to Head Start programs, and provides $75 million for State health access grants.

“As this timely bill moves through the legislative process, I encourage my colleagues to maintain their commitment to bettering the lives of American citizens. The bill represents a much-needed return to the core values of our great nation. The people want a new direction for the country; a direction that represents an investment in their priorities,” continued Matsui. “I will continue to fight for the improvements my constituents want and deserve.”

The FY 2008 Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Bill is expected to be considered on the House Floor next week.
