Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-05) praised today’s passage of the Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act for 2008 (H.R. 2643), which contains $500,000 for the City of Sacramento to continue strengthening wastewater infrastructure in its downtown area. The House of Representatives approved H.R. 2643 by a vote of 272 to 155.“Sacramento’s combined sewer system has performed admirably for many years, and now is the time for it to get a well-deserved upgrade,” said Matsui. “These federal dollars will help replace antiquated pipes in our city’s sewer system, allowing it to expand capacity and effectively handle increased amounts of wastewater.”Sacramento’s Combined Sewer Improvement Project is a multi-year undertaking designed to overhaul the downtown area’s existing wastewater treatment system. The project has received significant federal funding in the past. “Building on previous investments in Sacramento’s clean water infrastructure, this commitment from Congress acknowledges that Sacramento is a capable and worthy partner in improving our country’s water quality,” continued Matsui. “Continuing to repair our sewers will help raise Sacramento’s already-high quality of life.”The Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act funds all of the country’s major environmental and conservation programs. In total, the legislation provides approximately $27 billion for a variety of initiatives that improve air and water quality, support the National Park System, protect fish and wildlife, and strengthen the country’s environmental legacy.###
