Matsui Praises Appointment of Police Chief Nájera to FEMA National Advisory Council

Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-05) applauded the appointment of Sacramento Police Chief Albert Nájera to the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) newly-created National Advisory Council. The National Advisory Council was initiated to advise FEMA on all aspects of preparedness and emergency management in an effort to increase coordination with its partners across the country.
Congresswoman Matsui praised FEMA Administrator R. David Paulison’s decision to appoint Chief Nájera to this critical advisory position: “Mr. Paulison has very wisely chosen Sacramento Police Chief Albert Nájera to serve on FEMA’s National Advisory Council. I am confident that Chief Nájera’s years of experience in law enforcement will serve FEMA well.”Matsui added, “I have always been impressed by Chief Nájera’s understanding of the complexities of emergency management and homeland security. He has a nuanced understanding of how local, state, and federal governments must plan and prepare together. Chief Nájera’s appointment will ensure that FEMA is well aware of the needs of Sacramento and of California, as well as of our region’s successes in planning and preparedness.”FEMA’s National Advisory Council was created by the Post-Katrina Emergency Management Reform Act of 2006. Members are appointed by the FEMA Administrator to represent a wide cross-section of officials from the emergency management, law enforcement, private, and nongovernmental sectors.
The Council is tasked with facilitating effective and ongoing coordination of government preparedness, protection, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts. Specifically, the Council will focus attention on the development and revision of national preparedness goals, the National Incident Management System, the National Response Plan, and other related security response strategies.
