Congresswoman Matsui Celebrates Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Thursday, May 3, 2007
Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-05) encouraged all Americans to celebrate May as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month. This year's theme is “Meeting the Challenges for Asian Pacific Americans.”
“Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is the perfect opportunity to acknowledge and celebrate the impact that the Asian and Pacific Islander American (APIA) community has made on our society,” Congresswoman Matsui said. “Our nation has greatly benefited from the unique contributions of this diverse group of citizens.”
Currently, there are over 14 million APIAs living in the United States, with over 4 million residing in California. As a member of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, Congresswoman Matsui is dedicated to ensuring that these citizens' achievements are recognized by all, and that this instrumental group of people enjoys the same liberties and freedoms as all Americans.
“As a nation, we should use this month to re-dedicate ourselves to helping people of all races, religions, and backgrounds achieve the American dream,” said Ms. Matsui.
Since 1992, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month has been recognized by Congress as a way to facilitate understanding and increase appreciation about Asian Pacific American heritage.
