Congresswoman Matsui's Statement on Passage of SAFCA Assessment

Thursday, April 26, 2007

Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui praised the overwhelming passage of a new assessment district that will provide $326 million to finance the local share of numerous flood protection projects, including improvements to Folsom Dam and to Sacramento-area levees.   Once these upgrades are completed, Sacramento will achieve 200-year flood protection.

Congresswoman Matsui issued the following statement after the assessment was approved with the support of over 80 percent of voters:

“I am pleased that Sacramento residents have made the right choice in approving this new assessment district.  This vote clearly shows that Sacramentans take the threat of flooding seriously, and are prepared to do their part to strengthen our flood protection system. The funds that will be raised through this assessment will constitute the necessary local match for flood protection dollars provided by the state and federal governments.  As such, these assessment dollars will be critical to adding a spillway to Folsom Dam, while strengthening the levees that protect thousands of lives, homes, and businesses in our region.”
