Matsui Opening Remarks at Health Subcommittee Markup of Opioid Legislation
Washington, April 25, 2018
Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) delivered the following opening remarks today at a Subcommittee on Health markup on “Opioid Legislation and H.R. 5554:”
Our Committee has a daunting, yet absolutely essential, task before us today: to make policy changes that address the opioid epidemic without creating unintended consequences.
This effort requires our careful attention. We have all heard stories from constituents about the devastating toll that this crisis is having on families. But, not everyone’s experience with substance use disorder is the same, which means we have to look at this epidemic from many different angles.
For many patients, accessing quality treatment, whether medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder or mental health services for an underlying mental illness, continues to be an obstacle.
I believe that technology has the power to bridge some of those gaps in access and to improve the coordination and integration of care. I am pleased to lead three bills today that leverage technology to advance treatment for patients suffering from an opioid use disorder. I look forward to working diligently on these bills, and others, with my colleagues.
