Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Matsui (CA-06) released the following statement denouncing the Trump Administration’s proposal to freeze fuel economy targets and repeal California’s ability to set their own standard:
“This proposal is shear recklessness. As our nation grapples with the urgent challenge of climate change, this Administration is trying to revoke states’ ability to advance commonsense environmental policies that reduce pollution and strengthen our economy. Despite the President’s attempts to take our country down an unsustainable path, I know that California will remain steadfast in our work to defend emission reduction standards.”
Congresswoman Matsui is the lead sponsor of the Clean and Efficient Cars Act of 2018, which would codify the EPA’s light-duty vehicle greenhouse gas emissions standards and the Department of Transportation’s Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards for model years 2021 to 2025. It would also block the agencies from creating loopholes in the standards.
