Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representative Doris Matsui (D-CA) issued the following statement on California’s proposed rule for the safe testing of light-duty autonomous delivery vehicles:

“By proposing this rule, California is taking another important step in the effort to safely deploy autonomous vehicles in our communities. AVs will improve the quality of life for millions who currently are unable to drive a car – opening up the opportunity to maintain their independence, run errands, or visit a loved one. In particular, smaller autonomous delivery vehicles can transform the services around us, ranging from food and grocery to medicine delivery. Especially in Sacramento, we have the opportunity to leverage our 5G communications infrastructure to be the center of AV testing and deployment and I look forward to ensuring these vehicles are deployed safely and quickly.”

Last Congress, Matsui introduced legislation to ensure technology companies, auto manufacturers, and new market entrants are on a level playing field for testing AVs.
