Matsui Condemns Trump Administration's Indefinite Family Incarceration Rule

SACRAMENTO, CA – Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) issued the following statement on the Trump Administration’s move to indefinitely incarcerate migrant families.

"By seeking to deny migrant families basic human rights, the Trump Administration is again betraying the values of our country. We cannot repeat the mistakes of our past, and we cannot allow the White House to end decades-old legal protections and indefinitely detain vulnerable migrant children and families. We need action, and we cannot allow the Trump Administration to proceed with yet another act of cruelty to migrant families," said Congresswoman Matsui.

"I recently visited detention centers at the border. I have seen adults and children alike suffer in facilities with minimal standards of care. Despite promises from this Administration to cease the abhorrent family separation policy, I have seen children separated from their parents and guardians. No one deserves to be treated this way, and we have a duty to stand up for those who cannot stand up for themselves. The United States is a beacon of hope for the world, and many of these people are fleeing violence and oppression in search of a better future. This rule flies in the face of American values, and we must stop it from being finalized. Whether through the federal courts or Congressional action, we need to step in and ensure that every migrant family is treated with dignity and humanity."
