Representative Matsui Calls for Action After Oregon Gun Violence
In response to yesterday’s shooting at Umpqua Community College, Congresswoman Doris Matsui made the following statement:
“I am deeply saddened by the news of yesterday’s shooting at Umpqua Community College in Oregon. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.
“It troubles me that the tragic news of yesterday’s shooting no longer comes as a surprise. It is the 45th school shooting just this year. We cannot allow these repetitive tragedies to numb us to the suffering of families across the country who continue to grieve lost loved ones, and the struggle of those resilient individuals who continue to recover from their wounds. We cannot allow ourselves to accept these senseless acts of violence as routine and unavoidable. These tragedies continue to happen, not because we lack solutions, but because we fail to act on the solutions at our disposal.
“We should no longer ignore the gravity of this national crisis, nor should we continue to allow our hands to be tied by politics. There are ways to enact common-sense gun regulations to protect our children, our families and our neighbors from the threat of gun violence. The time to act is now.”
