Congresswoman Matsui Announces Federal Grant to Help Los Rios Community College Establish Manufacturing Apprentice Program

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) announced that the Los Rios Community College District has been awarded a $5 million federal grant from the U.S. Department of Labor to fund the Northern California Community College American Apprenticeship Initiative.
The partnership consists of five California Colleges, the Sacramento Employment & Training Agency and Siemens Transportation.  The funds will help the Los Rios Community College District establish an apprenticeship program in Northern California focused on advanced manufacturing. Los Rios will improve advanced manufacturing coursework to ensure that it aligns with regional industry needs and will redesign and schedule college classes to support apprenticeships. As a result, more students will be immersed in hands on learning and upon graduation will be prepared to enter the manufacturing workforce.
“It is vital that our education system is meeting our country’s workforce needs. Apprenticeships are a valuable tool that support local employers while also ensuring that we are creating career pathways for job seekers and Los Rios graduates. I commend Los Rios and their partners for working to establish this apprenticeship pipeline,” said Congresswoman Doris Matsui.
“This is just tremendous news for American River College, the Los Rios Community College District and our regional economy!” said Los Rios Chancellor Brian King. “And we received the news about the apprenticeship grant on the same day that President Obama is calling on our nation to identify innovative and creative ways to provide community college students with a debt-free education. The timing could not be better!"
