Congresswoman Matsui Statement on the Senate Hearing on the Cruise Passenger Protection Act

Congresswoman Matsui and Congressman Poe are Authors of House Companion Bill

Today Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) issued the following statement on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation’s hearing on S.1340, the Cruise Passenger Protection Act:

“Millions of Americans will embark on a cruise this year.  While these cruises are marketed as safe, family friendly vacations, the unfortunate reality is that crime does occur on cruise ships.  Congress has a role to play in making sure that cruise ship victims have the resources they need, and I am pleased that Senator Rockefeller is moving forward with a hearing on the Cruise Passenger Protection Act.

“In 2010 the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act, authored by Congressman Poe and myself, was signed into law by President Obama.  This legislation put in place critical protections for thousands of Americans who unknowingly put themselves at risk when they go on a cruise.  This legislation was a great first step, but more needs to be done.  The Cruise Passenger Protection Act will continue to build upon the security and safety measures aboard our cruise ships, ensure that consumers have access to accurate information and provide victims with the support and resources they deserve.

“With this important legislation moving forward in the Senate, it is time for the House to follow suit.  Cruise passengers deserve the right to know that they will be safe and secure on their hard-earned vacations.”
Congresswoman Matsui is a long-time advocate for improving safety and security aboard cruise vessels.  She authored the Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act (CVSSA), bipartisan legislation that was signed into law in 2010.  And she is currently the author of the Cruise Passenger Protection Act (CPPA) that would build on the CVSSA to ensure maximum protection for passengers and victims.
