HUD’s Choice Neighborhoods Program supports locally driven strategies to improve economic opportunity and reduce concentrated poverty

Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) led 23 Members of Congress in calling on the House Appropriations Committee to provide funds to support the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) Choice Neighborhoods program. The program supports the transformation and rehabilitation of public housing and supports communities working to revitalize low-income neighborhoods. “Access to affordable, quality housing is inextricably linked to families’ economic stability,” said Congresswoman Matsui. “This proven program helps communities revitalize local neighborhoods, improve the quality of life of public housing residents, and increase opportunity for families. It is absolutely critical that we continue federal support for community-based housing solutions like the Choice Neighborhoods program.” In 2015, Sacramento’s Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA) received a $30 million grant from Choice Neighborhoods to help revitalize the Twin Rivers neighborhood. The Trump Administration’s budget outline released in March 2017 proposed eliminating the program despite its track record of success. Between 2010 and 2015, the Choice Neighborhoods program used limited federal investment to leverage private investment at an over 7:1 ratio, generating an additional $3.68 billion dollars in outside investment in high poverty communities.
