Congresswoman Matsui Remarks at House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology Hearing
“Fighting for Internet Freedom: Dubai and Beyond” hearing held jointly with two Committee on Foreign Affairs Subcommittees
Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA), a member of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications and Technology spoke today at the “Fighting for Internet Freedom: Dubai and Beyond” hearing. The hearing was held jointly by the Subcommittee on Communications and Technology, and the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade; and the Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights, and International Organization. Her remarks, as prepared for delivery, were:
“In today’s global economy, with over 2.3 billion users, the internet has become a necessity, not a luxury. That is why I was troubled by the decision in Dubai regarding government control over the Internet.
“I believe the U.S. Delegation worked diligently in Dubai, to craft a deal that protects a free and open Internet. One of the positives that came from Dubai was recognition by most of the developed world to protect the current multi-stakeholder approach which has allowed the Internet to flourish.
“Ultimately, however, the Administration made the right decision by refusing to support a bad policy. I believe the status quo of a free, transparent and open internet must continue.
“We need to continue to promote innovation and openness of the Internet around the globe.”
