Rep. Matsui Statement on FCC Network Neutrality Rules Applauds New Safeguards for Anchor Institutions
• Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA), a Member of the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Communications, Technology, and the Internet, issued the following statement regarding the Net Neutrality Rules put forward by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) today:
• I applaud the FCC for voting to move forward on Rules that enforces core Net Neutrality principles to help ensure consumers have access to a free and open Internet,• Congresswoman Matsui said. • I commend the FCC for specifically including new language in the definition of broadband Internet access service and in the non-discrimination protections to ensure that anchor institutions, such as our schools and libraries, are protected under the new Net Neutrality Rules.•
Last week, Congresswoman Matsui sent a letterurging the FCC to protect • anchor institutions• in the final Net Neutrality Rules. • Anchor institutions • the schools, libraries, community colleges, and other higher education institutions • are often the only avenue for free access to the Internet for the public,• she wrote in the letter. • It is absolutely critical that the general public•’s access to the Internet through our nation•’s community anchor institutions is not impeded.•
• I believe the Net Neutrality Rules are a balanced step forward, and I plan to continue to monitor the implementation of the new Rules,• Matsui added.
