Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui released the following statement on the passage of the 21st Century Cures Act in the House of Representatives: “There is nothing more heart-wrenching than watching a loved one with a chronic or life-threatening condition go without the care and treatments they need.  For the 30 million Americans with rare diseases, there is often no effective treatment option even to address symptoms, much less a cure.  With all the great innovation and advances in technology of the 21st Century, we can do better. Today’s passage of the 21st Century Cures Act takes strides to accelerate development of novel cures and provide hope to patients. “We are making significant new investments in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to support life-saving research that can have a real impact on families in Sacramento and across the country.  We are providing new funding to combat the devastating opioid abuse and heroin epidemic and starting to reform our nation’s broken mental health system to bring mental illness out of the shadows. “But our work here is far from over. We must build on this progress for cures and treatments and ensure that patients receive the right care in the right place at the right time. We must continue to push for greater use of telemedicine; a powerful tool for improving patient care and lowering costs. And we need to remain vigilant to protect and expand coverage for the millions of Americans who receive mental and physical health services through the Affordable Care Act, Medicare, and Medicaid. Repealing the ACA or cutting Medicare or Medicaid would undo all of the progress we have made with this bill. “While I’m encouraged by these investments that we are committing to, I’m extremely disappointed that we are taking resources from the Prevention and Public Health Fund. Investments in prevention are critical for our health care future, which I will never stop fighting for.” Highlights of Cures and Mental Health Provisions that Congresswoman Matsui has championed:
  • Making significant new investments in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for medical research.
  • Encouraging drug development for rare diseases.
  • Providing significant new funding to combat the opioid abuse and heroin epidemic.
  • Clarity for doctors, patients, and families on how information can be shared under HIPAA.
  • Funding to better equip first responders and community members to help people in mental health crisis.
  • Encouraging innovation and the use of technology in health care and taking steps towards our goal of achieving interoperability among health IT systems.
