MATSUI AND SACRAMENTO STATE ANNOUNCE $2 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING FOR CAPITAL CAMPUS PROJECT
SACRAMENTO, CA – An infusion of $2 million in federal funding is heading to Sacramento State thanks to Community Project Funding secured by Congresswoman Doris Matsui. She announced the funding this morning at a press conference alongside Sacramento State President Luke Wood, Dean David Lang, Downtown Sacramento Partnership Executive Director Michael Ault, and other community leaders on Capitol Mall.
The federal funding will help advance the university’s transformative downtown economic development project, which aims to integrate student housing, academic space, workforce development, and hospitality just steps from the State Capitol.
“The Capital Campus project is a powerful example of what can happen when community leaders work together and fight for a better future,” saidCongresswoman Matsui. “This funding is not just about advancing a development project. It is about opening doors for students, strengthening our workforce, revitalizing downtown, and making sure Sacramento gets its fair share of federal resources. That is the kind of leadership Sacramento deserves, and I will keep fighting every day to deliver for this community’s future.”
“Congresswoman Doris Matsui’s leadership in securing $2 million in federal funding is a powerful investment in the future of Sacramento State’s downtown capital campus and revitalizing the urban core,” said President Wood. “These funds will help us accelerate our ambitious, university-led economic development project, which will transform underutilized state land into a vibrant center for education, innovation, housing, and economic opportunity. This support helps our future students, policymakers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders come together to shape California’s future.”
“For our students, the Capital Campus represents real access to opportunity. Bringing academic programs, workforce partnerships, and experiential learning into the heart of downtown allows us to connect classroom learning directly to public service, industry, and policy,” said Dean Lang. “This federal investment helps accelerate that integration: ensuring that our students are not only educated, but professionally prepared to lead in this region. We’re grateful for Congresswoman Matsui’s partnership. Now our job is to put this investment to work and deliver measurable results for our students and our city.”
“The leadership of Congressmember Matsui in securing federal funding to support the continued elevation of uses along our Capitol Mall corridor, including the Downtown Sacramento State Center and the Riverfront Stitch Park, is exactly the type of shared vision and catalytic investment we need to champion these projects forward,” said Michael Ault, Executive Director, Downtown Sacramento Partnership. “We are grateful for her continuing to secure resources to further the evolution of downtown Sacramento and the capital region’s economy for the next generation."
The Sacramento State Capital Campus is a first-of-its-kind initiative intended to reinvigorate downtown Sacramento and serve as a national model for university-led urban development. The federal funding, secured by Congresswoman Matsui, will support the continued advancement of the project and is expected to help move planning and site preparation forward as the vision continues from concept to reality.

This funding builds on Congresswoman Matsui’s longtime advocacy for Sacramento State and the university’s role in driving innovation and opportunity in the region. In November 2022, she secured $3 million in federal funding for Sacramento State to expand digital equity outreach efforts in the Sacramento region. Earlier that year, the Congresswoman also secured $575,000 for the power engineering lab and $250,000 for the creation of a classroom focused on cybersecurity training.
