Rep. Doris Matsui Announces $4.4 Million for Sacramento Crime Control and Prevention
Stimulus Funds Will Create Safer Community; Preserve Local Safety Programs

Today, Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA - 05) announced that Sacramento will be receiving $4,464,650 in Justice Assistance Grant Program (JAG) funding that will assist with local crime control and prevention programs, and improve Sacramento's criminal justice system.

The funds are appropriated through the Department of Justice as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan that Rep. Matsui voted for and was signed into law by President Obama six weeks ago. The City of Sacramento will be receiving $2,527,660, and Sacramento County will receive $1,936,990 immediately.

"This money is an important victory for Sacramento, and will assist both the city and county to prevent and control crime throughout the region by giving them the resources they need in these challenging economic times," said Congresswoman Matsui. "This money will also help the law enforcement community, which is struggling to keep vital community-based programs running, continue to make Sacramento the best city to live and raise a family."

The JAG Program, through which the grants are given, will allow Sacramento to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime, and improve the criminal justice system. These JAG funds can be used for local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies and contractual support. The grants will also help strengthen our criminal justice information system, specifically in the following areas: law enforcement programs; prosecution and court programs; prevention and education programs; corrections and community corrections programs; drug treatment programs; and planning, evaluation, and technology improvement programs.
