The Impacts of Republicans' Big Ugly Bill

The Big Ugly Bill, now signed into law by President Trump, is the largest cut to Medicaid in American history. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, 16 million Americans will lose their health care disproportionately impacting seniors, rural communities and low-income residents. Rural hospitals will be at riskThe health care sector will see massive layoffs to their workforce. Americans will be less safe and less able to access the care they need.

The bill will cut $186 billion dollars from the Sustainable Nutrition and Assistance Program (SNAP) over the next ten years. These cuts will extend far beyond the SNAP program itself, as every $1 in cuts has 14-20 times that in losses for our food and agricultural economies.

At the same time it will add over $3 trillion to our national debt and leave millions of Americans buried in their own medical debt.

Bottom line—this bill is the largest transfer of wealth from working class Americans to the rich in the nation’s history.

This legislation will strip away care from those who need it most and are the most vulnerable—because they can't fight back. That’s why I fought back tooth and nail against this bill. That’s why I will continue to fight to prevent its worst impacts from becoming a reality. I will never stop fighting to ensure our community is protected
