SACRAMENTO BUSINESS JOURNAL: SACRAMENTO NATIVE AMERICAN HEALTH CENTER'S NEW SOUTH SACRAMENTO CLINIC GETS $1 MILLION FEDERAL APPROPRIATION
The Sacramento Native American Health Center got a gift of federal funds to pay for its expansion on Florin Road.
On Wednesday, U.S. Rep. Doris Matsui announced she had secured $1 million in funding for the health center, which opened in May, in last year’s government funding package.
“The Florin Road expansion brings SNAHC’s services right to the heart of South Sacramento — reaching folks where they are and allowing families to be proactive about their health,” Matsui said, in a news release. “I’m proud to support this new chapter in the clinic’s history.”
SNAHC Development Director Maureen Wimsatt said the funding went toward buying equipment for the clinic.
“These (appropriations) really infuse dollars into the community quickly, so you can complete a project, and you can complete it well,” Wimsatt said.
Sutter Health also contributed $3 million to fund the $8 million project, and Wimsatt said the organization also used about $2 million in federal funding it received under the American Rescue Plan Act to finish the health center.
The 35,000-square-foot clinic has been open for eight months, and Wimsatt said it's been ramping up its patient visits.
“We’re just gradually using a lot of strategies to let patients know that we are there,” Wimsatt said.
The clinic, at 3800 Florin Road, is the organization’s first location outside the central city. It provides most of its services out of its three-story clinic in Midtown.
SNAHC is a federally qualified health center that serves both Native American and non-Native American patients. Federally qualified health centers receive extra federal reimbursement to treat underserved communities.
In addition to medical services, the new Florin Road health clinic provides dental, behavioral health and supportive services. The new location has the potential to double the number of patients the organization sees, from 12,000 to 24,000.
