Congresswoman Doris Matsui to Attend SEARCH's 40th Anniversary Event
Sacramento, CA - Rep. Doris O. Matsui (CA-05) will attend SEARCH's 40th Anniversary Celebration tomorrow evening, Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 at 6:30 PM to celebrate its 40th year of work to support local, tribal, state and federal law enforcement and public safety officials throughout the country augment and strengthen their public safety programs.
System for the Electronic Analysis and Retrieval of Criminal Histories, SEARCH, began as Project SEARCH in 1969. SEARCH works to integrate information systems, so that local, state, and national agencies can view and share the same information; with the objective to help law enforcement apprehend and prosecute criminals while working to safeguard the privacy rights of individual citizens. A national non-profit headquartered in Sacramento, SEARCH is supported largely by federal funds.
Congresswoman Matsui secured $500,000 in the FY 2009 Omnibus Appropriations bill. The funding will be used to enhance and upgrade information systems, build integrated information systems vital to all criminal justice agencies, and ensure compatibility between local, state, regional, and national systems. This federal funding will allow SEARCH to offer much of the training and assistance at no cost to public agencies which are finding many of their budgets cut during these challenging times.
"SEARCH plays an important role in our criminal justice and public safety system both at a national level and here in Sacramento," stated Rep. Matsui. "It is clear that the federal government must support the work of SEARCH as we continue to integrate and update our public safety programs and provide enhanced security for Sacramentans."
