Congresswoman Doris Matsui Honors Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Today, on the first day of the national observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-05) issued the following statement:

"Domestic violence is a grave concern for all of us, and an issue which will not just require a legislative solution, but a community solution to help raise awareness and shine the light on the reality of domestic violence in this country. While we would all like to believe that domestic violence does not occur, it unfortunately is a fact of life for many American families, including in our community. I am proud to co-sponsor legislation to mark this occassion, as my colleagues in the House of Representatives and I make a visible commitment to keeping victims and their families safe and holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.

"October is a time of year when many American families enjoy the changing seasons, Halloween preparations, and upcoming winter holidays. But it is also a time to honor and remember the victims of domestic violence, and to bring awareness to this important issue. I want to thank the many volunteers and organizations who are committed to providing a safe-haven for local families who are struggling to deal with the devastating physical and psychological effects of domestic violence, and pledge my continued support to helping those in need."
