Three-Day Tour Will Begin with Local LEED Certified Office Building
Sacramento, CA - Rep. Doris Matsui (CA-05) will be kicking-off her three-day Sacramento energy tour, "Renewable Energy for a Renewed Economy Tour," tomorrow by visiting a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified office building, Gateway Tower East, located in South Natomas.
Congresswoman Matsui's Renewable Energy for a Renewed Economy Tour will consist of a three-day tour across Sacramento of local clean energy and green technology businesses. As a member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and the Energy and Environment Subcommittee, Rep. Matsui has been a long-time advocate of renewable energy and its benefits to the environment and to the economy.
Last month, Congresswoman Matsui introduced the Smart Planning for Smart Growth Act of 2009, which aligns infrastructure and land use planning with greenhouse gas reduction goals to preserve resources and fight climate change. This legislation, H.R. 1780, was recently included in the comprehensive climate change and energy legislation that was introduced by Energy and Commerce Chairman Henry Waxman and Energy and Environment Subcommittee Chairman Ed Markey, the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009.
"I am looking forward to getting a tour to see how specific design, technological, and environmental aspects were integrated into the building and how Gateway Tower East can be used as a model of energy efficiency and stustainable building design throughout the Sacramento-area. The development of clean, renewable sources of energy and investments in energy efficient material are the growth industries of the 21st Century," said Congresswoman Matsui. "And we are marking Sacramento's place at the forefront of the new, green economy."
The LEED green building rating system was developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), and provides a suite of standards for environmentally sustainable construction. LEED is an open and transparent process where the technical criteria proposed by the LEED committees are publicly reviewed for approval by the more than 10,000 membership organizations that currently constitute the USGBC.
