Congresswoman Doris Matsui Praises President Obama's Supreme Court Nomination

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-CA) issued the following statement on the President's announcement that he will be nominating Judge Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court:

"Judge Merrick Garland's considerable experience and demonstrated sound legal judgment make him an exceptional candidate for a Supreme Court Justice. As the Chief Judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia, Judge Garland has proven his ability to confront complex legal questions with an independent perspective, and I have no doubt that he would make principled contributions to the Court, if confirmed.

"The President of the United States has fulfilled his Constitutional duty in nominating a qualified candidate to fill the Supreme Court vacancy. Now, it is time for the Senate to fulfill its Constitutional duty to give Judge Garland a fair hearing and timely vote. There is clear precedent for confirming a nominee in an election year, even when the Senate is not controlled by the President's party. I urge the Senate to act in the best interest of our Constitution and this country in considering this nomination."
