Congresswoman Doris Matsui Sworn In to the 112th Congress
Will Continue to Represent the Voice of Sacramento in the House of Representatives

Today, Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (D-CA) released the following statement after being sworn in to serve California's Fifth Congressional District in the 112th Congress:

I am honored and humbled that Sacramentans re-elected me to represent our community, and I will continue to spend every day making sure that Sacramento's voice is heard in our nation's capital.

The primary focus of this next Congress must be to continue to improve our economy and create jobs. The effects of the recent recession continue to be seen throughout the Sacramento region, and we must do everything we can to not only reverse those effects, but use this as an opportunity to create a stronger foundation for sustainable economic growth.

We must acknowledge that we have many challenges before us, including keeping families in their homes, diversifying our economy, continuing progress on our flood protection improvements and supporting our schools and first responders, despite the drastic budget cuts at the state and local levels. These are challenges; but I believe they are achievable.

Our community is blessed with enormous benefits, and we must all work together to use these to our advantage. Our world-class colleges and universities, premier health care services, and community spirit have helped set Sacramento apart. Already, Sacramento is taking a leadership role in fueling a green economy and manufacturing clean energy products. Moreover, our community has the drive, entrepreneurial spirit and collaborative partnerships that can truly move our region forward.

There is critical work that must be done over the next two years to ensure that the promise of the American Dream remains attainable, and that includes ensuring access to educational opportunities and high-quality, affordable health care. I will strive to work with my colleagues to continue to strengthen the American economy and responsibly reduce the deficit. And I remain committed to fighting to protect Social Security and Medicare, and the gains made for the American people under both the health care and Wall Street reform bills.

As the 112th Congress begins, I encourage my constituents to continue an active dialogue with me about how we can improve our economy and housing market, create jobs, and continue to strengthen our schools, our levees, and our community as a whole. I remain steadfast in my commitment to representing Sacramento's interests in Congress, and working every day to ensure Sacramento remains a wonderful place to live, work and play.
