Congresswoman Matsui Announces $220,000 Federal Award to Sacramento State
Funds will Expand Access to Support Needed to Achieve Higher Educational Degrees
CA - Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-05) today announced that the California State University, Sacramento has received a nearly $220,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Ronald E. McNair Postbaccalaureate Achievement Program. This federal grant is designed to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities.
"I am pleased that this funding will allow Sacramento State the resources to continue to provide support for disadvantaged students with strong, demonstrated academic potential, who are seeking higher degrees," said Congresswoman Matsui. "To compete in the global market, we must invest in our education system to strengthen our workforce."
The Sacramento State McNair Scholars Program is a two-year, federally funded program designed to prepare low-income and first-generation or underrepresented undergraduate students at Sacramento State for admission and study at the doctoral level. Each year, McNair Scholars participate in both academic and summer activities.
"The McNair Scholars Program at Sacramento State reflects our University's deeply held value of providing opportunities for the students of Californians," said Sacramento State President Alexander Gonzalez. "I appreciate the work of Congresswoman Doris Matsui and our other federal partners as we work to preserve access, quality and affordability. This grant will further the McNair legacy at Sacramento State, and allow students to pursue their loftiest ambitions in higher education."
Funding for this grant comes to Sacramento State through the Federal TRIO Program, which provides support for outreach and student services programs directed toward individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.
