Congresswoman Matsui Announces $5 Million in Stimulus Funds for Sacramento-Area Water Project
Water Conservation Project Will Allow More Water Into Delta, Create Local Jobs
"Among talks of saving the Delta, one of the best ways we can help conserve water is with proper metering and water management. This funding will directly help local communities conserve California most precious resource," said Rep. Matsui. "The water saved through new meters will help provide more water to California's Delta and create jobs here in Sacramento."
Developed and coordinated by the Sacramento Regional Water Authority, this project is estimated to conserve 1,730 acre feet of water each year. The project is expected to reduce demand and diversions from Folsom Lake, allowing more water to flow into the Sacramento Delta, which will also improve water quality. Additionally, this project is estimated to create 40 jobs for contractor services to install the meters over the 15 month schedule, and 23 jobs during the accelerated portion.
"We are very excited to have Reclamation recognize the value of this important regional project. These federal funds will allow local water agencies to accelerate the installation of meters, which will lead to significant water savings by customers," said John Woodling, Executive Director of the Sacramento Regional Water Authority. "The water savings will not only improve reliability of our local water supplies, but provide improved flow and water quality to the troubled Delta ecosystem."
