Congresswoman Matsui Announces Almost $100k for Community Services Planning Council
Federal Funding Will Help Tackle Hunger in Sacramento

CA Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) announced that the Sacramento Community Services Planning Council will receive an award of $99,396 from the United States Department of Agriculture. The federal grant, one of only fourteen given out across the country, will go towards the Council's Hunger Hits Home 2011 project, which is working to assess and address hunger in Sacramento County.

There is no denying the hunger problem that exists in Sacramento but this funding will take a significant step in evaluating how widespread it is, and allowing us to coordinate our efforts to fix it, said Congresswoman Matsui. This money will help the Council execute their Hunger Hits Home 2011 project and I look forward to working with partners at all levels to see this money implemented effectively.

The Hunger Hits Home 2011 project seeks to assess the extent, causes, and consequences of hunger in Sacramento County; to interview Sacramento food organizations to determine the capacity of the system in place and the amount of coordination that is taking place; and to engage stakeholders to develop an action plan that will move Sacramento County towards a hunger free community.

The award is authorized by the Food, Conservation, and Energy Act of 2008, which Congresswoman Matsui supported, and is part of a series of new USDA initiatives to end hunger in America.
