Congresswoman Matsui Announces Deadline for Congressional Nomination to a United States Military Academy
Local Residents Have Until October 31st to Submit Materials to Rep. Matsui to be Considered
CA Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-05) announced that Sacramento-area students have until October 31st to submit materials for consideration for Congressional nomination to a United States military academy class beginning in July, 2013. Nomination by a student's Congressional representative is required for all students looking to be accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy or the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
Nominating young men and women from Sacramento for our nation's military academies is one of my most important duties as a Member of Congress, said Congresswoman Matsui. Service in the armed forces is one of the most impressive and honorable paths an American can choose. These military academies are highly selective, and I am continually impressed with our local students who pursue admittance to these academies, as they exemplify the very best our country has to offer.
To apply for a military academy, an individual must be a U.S. citizen, a high school graduate between the ages of 17 and 23, unmarried, have no dependents and be of high moral character. Successful applicants have a broad academic background, the ability to pass a physical aptitude test, and strong leadership potential. Acceptance of a military academy appointment requires at least a nine-year service obligation, including four years at an academy and five years of active duty service.
In making her nominating decisions for individuals from the 5th Congressional District, Rep. Matsui considers an applicant's SAT/ACT scores, high school/college transcripts and the results of an interview with her Academy Selection Advisory Committee, which will be held in early December for qualifying applicants. Sacramento residents that have any questions about the process or need additional information can contact Rep. Matsui's district office at (916) 498-5600.
