Congresswoman Matsui Announces Federal Funding for CSUS Neurological Research

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) announced that the National Institute of Health (NIH) has awarded $329,114 to California State University, Sacramento (CSUS) to conduct clinical research on neurological disorders. Through this funding, CSUS researchers will conduct neurological research that will better characterize how the brain's spatial awareness can change as a result of experience, and that will help determine the physiological mechanisms that trigger such changes.
This funding will allow researchers to help find solutions and cures to neurological disorders that affect our ability to perceive and respond to our environment, said Rep. Matsui. Ultimately, this work will help doctors better understand impairments related to strokes and Alzheimer's disease, and work with patients to overcome these obstacles.

Sacramento State's faculty are known for a deep commitment to teaching that is enhanced by world-class research, said Joseph Sheley, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Sacramento State. This grant will open up new levels of understanding for our students and advance our knowledge of devastating neurological disorders.

Funding for this program comes through a special longstanding NIH program called the NIH Academic Research Enhancement Award (AREA). AREA awards support small research projects in the biomedical and behavioral sciences conducted by students and faculty in health professional schools and other academic universities that have not been major recipients of NIH research grant funds in the past.
