Congresswoman Matsui Announces Federal Grants for Sacramento Area Police Departments

Federal grant will help the cities of West Sacramento and Sacramento hire police officers

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) announced that the region has received over $2 million in grants through the federal COPS Grant Program. The City of Sacramento will receive $1.8 million to hire 15 police officers and the City of West Sacramento was awarded $250,000 to hire two new police officers. The program provides salaries and benefits for officer hires for three years.

"It is welcome news that both the Sacramento Police Department and the West Sacramento Police Department have been awarded federal funding to hire these new officers," said Congresswoman Matsui. "This federal funding will make our community safer and ensure that law enforcement agencies have the tools and resources it needs to build trust and relationships within our communities."

Mayor Christopher Cabaldon said, "We want to thank Congresswoman Matsui for supporting us in this grant process; her assistance was invaluable. Our police department is looking forward to using the additional officers to continue to deepen trust and better serve the community."

The federal grants are made available through the U.S. Department of Justice's Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) Hiring Program. The COPS Hiring Program is a competitive grant program that provides funding directly to state, local and tribal law enforcement agencies to hire, re-hire, or retain police officers that will be dedicated to address specific crime challenges and improve trust between police departments and area residents.
