Congresswoman Matsui Announces Net Neutrality Forum in Sacramento
FCC Commissioners Mignon Clyburn and Jessica Rosenworcel to Participate
Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Calif.) today announced that she will be holding a forum on net neutrality in Sacramento, California on Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Commissioners Mignon Clyburn and Jessica Rosenworcel will travel to Sacramento to participate in the forum.
"A free and open Internet is essential for consumers, and to encourage innovation and competition in the Internet ecosystem. Over the course of the year, I have heard from hundreds of my constituents in Sacramento on the future of the Internet. Given that the FCC is expected to consider new net neutrality rules by the end of the year, I am holding this timely forum in Sacramento to further explore the potential impacts on consumers, entrepreneurs, and local businesses. I believe that it is essential that the FCC listen to and engage with Americans outside of Washington. I am very pleased that FCC Commissioners Clyburn and Rosenworcel will be joining me in Sacramento to participate in this forum on net neutrality. Their leadership will be crucial moving forward on this important issue facing our innovation economy," said Congresswoman Matsui.
Additional details - including witnesses - will be announced closer to the event. The forum will be part of the House Energy and Commerce Committee minority record. It will be webcast live on Congresswoman Matsui's website and on the House Energy and Commerce minority website.
Earlier this year, Congresswoman Matsui and Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT), chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, introduced H.R. 4880 the Online Competition and Consumer Choice Act. This bipartisan legislation would require the FCC to ban so-called "paid prioritization" agreements between a broadband provider and a content provider, helping prevent the creation of a two-tiered Internet system and ensuring start-ups and entrepreneurs have access to the marketplace and that consumers can access all content equally.
