Congresswoman Matsui Announces Sacramento to Receive $1 Million for Homeland Security Efforts

CA - Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) today announced that the Sacramento region has been awarded $1 million from the Department of Homeland Security's Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI). This funding will be used for emergency management and homeland security activities throughout the region, including first responder training and the improvement of data sharing among local agencies involved in terrorism investigations.

"As the capitol of California, the Sacramento region is home to over two million residents, federal and state buildings and a wide mix of transportation and infrastructure systems. It is imperative that our first responders have the training, equipment and resources necessary to address threats and vulnerabilities before they occur," said Congresswoman Doris Matsui. "This federal funding will help ensure our region can continue to improve our ability to deter, respond to, and prepare for critical events."

The UASI grant program supports the unique planning, equipment, training, and exercise needs of high-threat, high-density urban areas, and assists them in building an enhanced and sustainable capacity to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism.

"We are incredibly grateful for the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) Program and how those funds will assist in enhancing our community's safety and security. We are especially appreciative of Congresswoman Matsui's leadership and continued support for Homeland Security opportunities that impact safety in our region," said Sacramento Police Chief Sam Somers, Jr.

Congresswoman Matsui has long been an advocate for maintaining and increasing UASI funding, and has fought to ensure the Sacramento region is considered eligible for this funding. Earlier this month she, along with Congressmen Ami Bera and Tom McClintock, sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson urging the inclusion of Sacramento in this year's round of UASI funding.
