Congresswoman Matsui Announces Sacramento to Receive $3 Million for Homeland Security Efforts

Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) today announced that the Sacramento region has been awarded $3 million from the Department of Homeland Security's Urban Areas Security Initiatives (UASI). This funding will be used for emergency management and homeland security initiatives throughout the region.

"The Sacramento region is home to hundreds of thousands of residents, federal and state buildings and a wide mix of transportation and infrastructure systems. It is imperative that we take steps today that strengthen our capacity and provide the tools needed to swiftly address our constantly evolving security needs," said Congresswoman Matsui. "This funding will help Sacramento make those critical investments, enhance our emergency response systems, and bolster our regional security."

The UASI grant program supports the unique planning, equipment, training, and exercise needs of high-threat, high-density urban areas, and assists them in building an enhanced and sustainable capacity to prevent, protect against, respond to, and recover from acts of terrorism.

"We are incredibly grateful for the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI) Program and how those funds will assist in enhancing our community's safety and security. We are especially appreciative of Congresswoman Matsui's leadership and continued support for Homeland Security opportunities that impact safety in our region," said Sacramento Police Chief Sam Somers, Jr.

Congresswoman Matsui has long been an advocate for maintaining and increasing UASI funding, and has fought to ensure the Sacramento region is considered eligible for this funding. In 2009, the Sacramento region received $4 million in UASI funding.
