Congresswoman Matsui Applauds $7 Million for Powerhouse Science Center
CA - Today, Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (D-Sacramento) applauded the announcement that Sacramento's Powerhouse Science Center has been awarded a $7 million state grant to pay for the first of the three buildings that will be built on the banks of the Sacramento River. The grant process was highly competitive, with the grant office receiving over $1 billion in requests. The Powerhouse Science Center was one of 44 projects selected from a pool of more than 300. Congresswoman Matsui had sent a letter in support of the project to the state grant office in November.
The Powerhouse Science Center will help revitalize our riverfront, provide children and families a world class education center and showcase the clean energy technology for which our region is quickly becoming known, said Congresswoman Matsui. Even better, the Center is expected to create 300 new jobs. Today's announcement of the $7 million grant is wonderful news, and is the result of many people working to develop a great idea and application.
This grant will pay for the first building in the center, which will house the earth and space sciences, and will allow for construction to begin while money is raised for the two additional buildings. The Center will be energy efficient, and will be built with LEED platinum certification in mind. Energy will come from six urban wind towers, two hydrogen fuel cells, and from photovoltaic solar trees.
This is one more example of Sacramento's innovation and ingenuity, and I look forward to continuing to assist with its development in any way that I can, added Matsui.
