Congresswoman Matsui Calls for More Funding to Address Opioid and Heroin Epidemic

Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06) released the following statement applauding the Obama Administration's actions to combat the opioid and heroin epidemic. The Administration's announcement came as House and Senate conferees met to consider the legislative package, S. 524, on opioids.

"The opioid and heroin epidemic has shaken our entire nation.

"Earlier this year, we witnessed a troubling rise in Fentanyl overdoses in Sacramento, and Americans across the country continue to fall victim to substance use disorders every day.

"I'm pleased that the Administration has announced several new actions to help our communities cope with the devastating effects of the opioid crisis. The President's plan to expand access to treatment, improve provider education, and advance research on pain treatments and related overdoses are important steps forward in our efforts to respond to this epidemic.

"Now, it is time for Congress to act. Democrats have continually called for new resources to be put toward the opioid and heroin epidemic. Without adequate funding, even sound policy will fall short. I urge my Republican colleagues to put the dollars we need toward truly helping communities on the ground deal with this crisis."
