Congresswoman Matsui Discusses her Opposition to Proposed Cuts to Medicare with Local Seniors

CA Today, Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (D-CA) addressed lunch attendees at the Stanford Settlement Senior Center about recent budget proposals that affect seniors specifically the Republican budget plan that would privatize Medicare and severely cut funding for Medicaid. The Congresswoman discussed her opposition to the plan, and alternatives to cutting these programs, that also reduce the deficit, and invest in our economic recovery. Over 70 seniors attended the Meals on Wheels by ACC and California Emergency Foodlink Brown Bag lunch at the Center.

It is essential that Sacramento seniors and their families are aware of the proposed cuts to Medicare and Medicaid contained in the Republican's 2012 budget plan, said Congresswoman Matsui. So many of us rely upon these programs in our everyday lives to help make ends meet, and it is imperative we understand exactly how these programs would affect local residents and our community. Today's lunch was another opportunity to have an open discussion with my constituents about ways that we can reduce spending while also making sure Medicare and Medicaid are protected.

Congresswoman Matsui is the Co-Chair of the Congressional Task Force on Seniors, and has been an active opponent of the proposal to privatize Medicare and cut Medicaid, introduced by Representative Paul Ryan (R-WI). In recent weeks, the Congresswoman has hosted press conferences, spoke on the House floor, held a Telephone Town Hall with over 18,000 participants.
