In recognition of the 90th anniversary of women gaining the right to vote, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) today released the following statement:
Today marks the 90th anniversary of women's suffrage in America. Women like Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Louisa May Alcott, and thousands of others did tremendous work to bring American women the right that we enjoy today. The fight for women's suffrage lasted over seven decades, fighting to bring generations of women the right to a voice in our political system.
Since the ratification of the 19th Amendment in 1920, women have continued to increase their participation in our political process. Women now hold 76 seats in the House and 16 in the Senate. For the first time in history, three female judges sit on the Supreme Court. On this momentous occasion, it is important to salute the women who came before us but also to remember the important work that lies ahead of us.
