CA Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) joined staff and supporters of St. John's Shelter for Women and Children to celebrate its 25th year of providing shelter and food for homeless women and children from across the Sacramento community. The event highlighted the success of St. John's Shelter over the past 25 years and celebrated the grand opening of Plates Caf and Catering, a restaurant and catering business designed to train St. John's Shelter clients in culinary arts and restaurant management.
For 25 years, St. John's has been providing shelter, food and essential services for hundreds of single mothers wanting to give better lives to their children, said Congresswoman Doris Matsui. The staff of St. John's Shelter have done so much for women and children in our community, and I am looking forward to supporting their work in the years ahead. With the opening of Plates Caf and Catering, St. John's now has an independent source of revenue and a training center to empower these women with marketable skills they can take with them into the workforce.
During their 25 years, St. John's Shelter has provided safety and support to over 23,000 women and children, and currently assists more than 1,000 a year. Congresswoman Matsui was joined at the event by Mayor Kevin Johnson, Sacramento County Supervisor Robert MacGlashan, and Executive Director of St. John's Shelter Michele Steeb.
