Congresswoman Matsui Pays Tribute to Sacramento Native Eleanor McClatchy in Honor of Women's History Month

Today, to kick off Women's History Month, Congresswoman Matsui (CA-06) paid tribute to Sacramento native Eleanor McClatchy on the House floor. Eleanor McClatchy served as president of the McClatchy newspapers from 1936 until 1978.

"Today, we mark the beginning of Women's History Month. For centuries, women have broken through barriers to move our country forward. Some of these women we know well: Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman Supreme Court Justice, or Sally Ride, the first American woman to be sent into space.

"The progress that women have made has taken the courage of countless trailblazers. In Sacramento, Eleanor McClatchy took over the family newspaper business at a young age. Eleanor had a background in theatre, but a lack of experience in the publishing business didn't stop her from stepping up to the plate in 1936 to become President of McClatchy newspapers. She led the company for 42 years, and under her leadership, the business grew significantly through the acquisition of additional newspaper, radio, and television platforms.

"Eleanor's story may be unique, yet it embodies the spirit of all women. In the face of challenges, we find a path forward.

"Let us honor women like Eleanor by opening up opportunity to future generations of women. Because when Women Succeed, America Succeeds!"

Congresswoman Matsui is a cosponsor of the bipartisan National Women's History Month resolution. This year's theme honors women's role in public service and the governmentandmdash;individuals who are often overlooked and undervalued yet have dramatically influenced our public policy and built a stronger and more democratic country.
