Congresswoman Matsui Recognizes Sacramentan Michele Steeb with Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus Allied Professional Award
Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06), member of the Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus, presented Michele Steeb with the Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus Allied Professional Award for her work as a victim's advocate. Michele Steeb is the executive director of Sacramento's non-profit organization, St. John's Shelter Program for Women and Children.
"Michele Steeb is a tremendous asset to the Sacramento region and truly exemplifies the spirit of the Allied Professional Award," said Congresswoman Matsui. "Through her work at St. John's Shelter Program she has dedicated herself to homeless women and children, and victims of abuse. She is passionate and supportive, and creates a safe family-oriented environment for clients to grow and thrive. I was pleased to present this award to Michele, who is a true advocate, leader and hero in the Sacramento community."
Since its founding in 2006, the bipartisan Congressional Victims' Rights Caucus has sought to empower those who are victims of crimes and to acknowledge the outstanding individuals who advocate for their rights. The Allied Professionals Award recognizes the efforts of individuals, organizations, and coalitions that directly benefit victims of crime. Congresswoman Matsui nominated Steeb because in her work at St. John's Shelter she has exhibited leadership, creativity and commitment in her efforts to improve the plight of crime victims.
St. John's Shelter Program for Women and Children is Sacramento's only shelter which is exclusively dedicated to supporting homeless women with children. Since 1985, the program has provided a safe and supportive haven to more than 25,000 displaced homeless women and children. Under Steeb's leadership, St. John's has launched two successful employment training programs, Plates Cafandeacute; and Catering and the First Steps Child Development Center, to help shelter residents develop the skills needed to become self-sufficient and get back on their feet.
