Congresswoman Matsui Secures $725,000 for UC Davis Medical School, Sacramento State Priorities
Federal Money Will Fund Medical Research and Emergency Care

"The Labor-HHS Appropriations bill approved today demonstrates this Congress' commitment to investing in our medical infrastructure and science research," said Rep. Matsui. "The inclusion of funding for UC Davis Medical Center and Sacramento State will help us continue to build a medical infrastructure that benefits our region on a daily basis, and I am pleased that these federal funds are reiterating our commitment to training and preparing our medical providers of the next generation."

Representative Matsui was instrumental in securing these funds at the federal level and recognizes the important role these institutions play in the Sacramento community. The Medical Center at UC Davis is the only Level I trauma center serving inland Northern California, and Sacramento State's College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics will use the funds being disbursed to support their ambitious effort to build a regional resource center for education in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields.

andquot;We are elated that Congresswoman Matsui was able to secure $350,000 for Sacramento State's College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics," CSUS President Alexander Gonzalez said. "This is a great step for ensuring that we prepare science students for the competitive 21st Century global economy. Our students will benefit from having access to modern scientific equipment that will help to prepare them for careers in science, technology, engineering and math. Our students will be better able to serve industries that are vital to Sacramento's economy. We are greatly appreciative for the Congresswoman's commitment to Sacramento State's students, faculty and staff.andquot;

"The work regional members of Congress are doing on behalf of our community is absolutely vital," said Claire Pomeroy, Vice Chancellor for Human Health Sciences at UC Davis and Dean of UC Davis School of Medicine. "Obtaining this funding helps us have the best medical equipment possible and ensures that patients with life threatening injuries and illnesses receive state-of-the-art care when our new Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion opens next year in Sacramento."

As Co-Chair of the National Service Caucus, Congresswoman Matsui was also proud to announce today that the legislation included increased funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service, which in part will fund the AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) volunteers based at McClellan Park. The bill fulfills the commitment made earlier this year by Congresswoman Matsui and her colleagues in the House and the Senate with the passage of the Senator Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act that supports our national and community service programs at a time of increased need for community renewal efforts.
