Congresswoman Matsui, Senate President pro Tem Steinberg, and Assemblyman Dickinson Present Awards at Inaugural Women's Appreciation Awards
Recognize Britta Guerrero, Women's Empowerment, and Dr. Rhonda Rios Kravitz for their Contributions to the Sacramento Community
CA - Today, Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06), Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, and Assemblyman Roger Dickinson joined together with members of the Sacramento community to honor local women at the inaugural Women's Appreciation Awards ceremony hosted at the California Museum.
The awards ceremony marked the ending of Women's History Month (also known as HERstory Month), which occurs each year in March. Over 70 nominations were received from local community members for the Leader of Tomorrow, Organization of the Year and Unsung Hero awards. The winners recognized this evening were:
- Leader of Tomorrow - Britta Guerrero, CEO of Sacramento Native American Health Center, for her innovative leadership in addressing health disparities and providing quality medical, dental, and behavioral health services to the Sacramento community.
- Organization of the Year - Women's Empowerment for its work empowering homeless women to make the changes needed to obtain jobs, stable housing, and healthy living choices for themselves and their children.
- Unsung Hero Award - Dr. Rhonda Rios Kravitz, Dean of the Learning Resource Center of Sacramento City College, for her commitment and work helping disadvantaged students.
"During Women's History Month we celebrate the enormous progress women have made throughout our history and the giants of our past who struggled, suffered and prevailed on behalf of women everywhere," said Congresswoman Doris Matsui. "I am pleased to join Senator Steinberg and Assemblyman Dickinson in recognizing the remarkable women who are making significant positive changes in our region and helping make it a better place to live."
"Sacramento is a community rich in talented, hard working women. It is important that we take time to acknowledge some of the women who are standard bearers for the region. Together with Congresswoman Matsui and Assemblyman Dickinson, I am honored to celebrate Britta Guerrero, Dr. Rhonda Rios Kravitz, and Women's Empowerment for the work they do to make Sacramento the progressive city we love," said Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg.
"I am pleased to cohost the Inaugural Sacramento Women's Appreciation Ceremony with Congresswoman Matsui and Senate pro Tem Steinberg," said Assemblyman Roger Dickinson. "There is no question that women are often pushed into the shadows of society. Far too many times throughout our nation's history their accomplishments have been overlooked. As Sacramento's elected representative in the State Assembly, I am proud that we all came together to recognize the women who make the Sacramento region better for all of us."
Tonight's event sought to raise awareness of the contributions local women are making to improve our region, California and our nation. The event was generously sponsored by SMUD, Sierra Health Foundation, Dignity Health, Kaiser Permanente and PGandamp;E.
