Congresswoman Matsui Speaks Out Against 200 Days of No Jobs Agenda from Republican Majority

Today, Congresswoman Doris O. Matsui (CA-5) spoke out against the Republican Majority's lack of a jobs plan, after 200 days in power in the House of Representatives. Saturday, July 22nd at noon marks 200 days since the beginning of the 112th Congress a Congress which the new Majority had promised would be focused on job creation and the economy, but one which has unfortunately not seen a single piece of jobs legislation signed into law. Congresswoman Matsui released the following statement in response:

Over the last 200 days, this Congress has spent precious time debating things like light bulbs, while continuing to witness Republican attacks on women, seniors, and the middle class. But what this Congress has not done is the exact thing the American people are pleading for us to do pass legislation that creates jobs and strengthens our economy.

I have been a vocal supporter of the Make it in America agenda, put forth by my Democratic colleagues and I, which focuses on shoring up our nation's manufacturing sector in order to keep good-paying American jobs from being shipped overseas. I have personally introduced legislation that focuses on investing in our growing clean energy sector and making necessary improvements to our infrastructure things which would not only create jobs today, but keep our country competitive in the future. But House Republicans have yet to stand with us to even consider these measures on the House floor, nor consider any jobs package that would put Americans back to work.

In Sacramento, people are struggling to make ends meet. The combined effects of furloughs, foreclosures, and lay-offs have resulted in persistent unemployment. I have seen first-hand the effects the economic collapse has had on families in Sacramento, and have pleaded with my colleagues to pass a jobs package. But instead, my colleagues are focusing their efforts on plans to end Medicare as we know it, decimate Medicaid, and privatize Social Security.

I believe that we must invest in our infrastructure, education, job training programs, and sectors with high job growth potential like clean energy if we are going to truly turn our economy around. That is why I will continue to fight to bring jobs legislation to the House floor, and deliver meaningful results for the people of Sacramento.
